Apple: Stay Away from SyncServices As if It Were a Swarm of Bees

To highlight the importance of the SyncServices folder in OS X, Apple says customers should stay away from it “as if it were a swarm of bees.” This is Apple’s actual wording in a standard support document on the company’s web site.

Knowledge-base article HT1865, titled “Mac OS X: Do not remove or modify the SyncServices folder,” warns about the dangers of messing around with a certain directory that iCloud accesses on a regular basis.

A story ran by TUAW recently sheds more light on the disaster that can happen if you don’t do what you’re told.’

The "affected" products include Mac OS X 10.4, Mac OS X 10.5, Mac OS X 10.6, MobileMe, OS X Lion, and iSync 3.x.

Apple begins with a summary, saying “As if it were a swarm of bees, you should stay away from the SyncServices folder.”

“Removing or modifying anything in the SyncServices folder--or in any subfolders within it--may cause unexpected issues,” the company warns.

Said folder is located in the Application Support folder, in the Library folder, in the Home folder.

The document specifically states that “Deleting or modifying things in the SyncServices folder may cause unexpected results.”รข€¨

These include (but are not limited to) getting duplicate contacts in Address Book or appointments in iCal, or complete data loss in the same two apps. Needless to point out, if you’re a business man leveraging Apple’s web suite, you’d better stay on iCloud’s good side.

Apple has one more warning for customers, before sending them off to other troubleshooting articles, stating that “Any lost or duplicate data could propagate to other devices and computers via iSync. This means data could be lost on other computers.”
