Amazon Explains Why Jailbroken iPads Cant Handle Their Instant Video App

Amazon recently released its nifty Instant Video app for iOS customers but some users are already very disappointed. The reason? Their iPads don’t support the playback features because of an existing jailbreak.

Although Apple frowns upon jailbreaks (hacks that enable functionality otherwise not supported by the vendor), millions of iPhone and iPad users worldwide enjoy reaping the benefits with no remorse. There are exceptions, of course.

Some developers, like Amazon, will not offer their services for customers whose iPads have been jailbroken.

One iPad owner who recently downloaded and installed Amazon’s Instant Video app found this out the hard way. He could use the app to browse content, but not to play it back.

An Amazon representative, David R., explained to him why the strange behaviour occurs.

“I’m sorry that the Amazon Instant Video service isn’t yet working on your iPad,” David R. told the unhappy customer in an email obtained by The Verge.

“The service is absolutely available to you. What we’re finding is that this specific error is popping up for folks whose iPads have any kind of jailbreak installed.”

“A jailbreak is a program installed on your device that lets you do stuff not necessarily supported by the manufacturer. For example, if Apple blocks access to fictional service provider Orange you can add a thing that gets around that block,” he continued.

David advised the customer to check and see if any of three apps were installed on his iPad. He mentioned “APT,” “Cydia,” and “Installer,” all of which are clear evidences of the hack in question.

“The presence of any of these indicates a jailbreak, and our service won’t work,” said David. “From the error message that you provided, it appears your device has been jail-broken. We are unable to provide any troubleshooting for your device.”

The Amazon representative ended his email advising the customer to contact whomever provided him with the jailbreak tools. Interestingly, he didn’t advise the customer to erase the hack and try reinstalling the Instant Video app on a clean version of iOS.
