VLC Media Player (Beta) for Android Now Available for Download

The popular multimedia application VLC has just been released in the Google Store Play, formerly known as Android Market.

Although this is just a beta version, VLC allows Android users to play most local video and audio files, but also network streams, such as the desktop version of VLC.

The application also features support for multi-track audio and subtitles, as well as auto-rotation, gestures for volume control and aspect-ratio adjustments.

Users who own an Android device will be happy to know that the developers also included a widget for audio control. Last but not least, VLC for Android supports cover art and audio headsets control.

However, given the fact that this is still a work in progress, the Android video client misses some features that are currently present in the desktop version.

According to the developing team, the following options are not available in this beta version of VLC for Android devices:

- Performance improvements are missing;
- Some audio issues might occur;
- Hardware decoding works only with a limited set of hardware;
- Other unknown issues.

In addition, VLC Mobile Team plans to change the basic user interface in future updates, so expect more visual improvements to be added soon.

Keep in mind that this beta version of the port to the Android platform is intended to Android tech-savvy, as the build is not stable enough for daily basis use. It is also worth mentioning that this build is slower than the final version.

VLC Beta (NEON version) is now available as a free download via Google Play Store and it should be fully compatible with devices running Android 2.1 and up.

This version is only for devices equipped with ARMv7 processors that support NEON, but other devices will be supported by other apps soon. Stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
