Molyneux Believes BioWare Should Stand by Mass Effect 3 Ending

One of the best known video game developers, famous for universes that he created, believes that developers need to stand by the game they create and explain their vision to their fans, rather than bow to pressure and change their own work.

Peter Molyneux, who is best known for his work on Fable, Black & White and Populous, has spoken with GameSpot Australia and used the recent controversy over Mass Effect 3, the action and role-playing game from BioWare.

The leader of 22 Cans stated, “BioWare are the authors, they are the creators of this world. They entertain millions of people and we have to put our trust in them. If they believe in what they did, they should stand by that.”

He added, “There has been many times where I’ve watched films or read books and felt cheated at an ending. It’s just today that you can say that about a computer game and then give feedback and that feedback can create a controversy.”

When Mass Effect 3 was launched in March, many fans complained about the ending, saying that the choices offered did not take into account their own choices and that the fate of several characters was not clear.

Since then, BioWare has announced and then launched an Extended Cut downloadable content package for free, giving gamers one extra ending choice and adding some more cutscenes.

Molyneux acknowledges that modern video games are always a work in progress, and that it is easier than ever to deliver new content and listen to the feedback that is being offered by the fan base.

BioWare has already said that it plans to deliver more content for Mass Effect 3 while also offering those interested in the multiplayer side of the game more Operations to take part in.
Molyneux is working on a game called 22 Experiments with his new company.
