Ubisoft Ready to Wrap Up Desmond Story with Assassins Creed III

The one constant of the Assassin’s Creed series, beside the open-world structure and themes, has been the presence of modern-day protagonist Desmond Miles, and even Ubisoft acknowledges that his story arc also needs to come to an end.

Alex Hutchinson, the creative lead working on Assassin’s Creed III, said during an Ubisoft press conference that, “Assassin’s Creed 1 was Altair’s story. Ezio has been and gone. You can engage with these historical stories individually without having to necessarily understand Desmond’s story. But yes, we eventually do have to wrap it up.”

He also confessed, “I think what you do is you finish it. I always pitched it to the guys on this game to think of it almost like Star Trek. Each game is a season… each big number is a sub-title. We’re not changing the universe, but we’re being given the reigns to the equivalent of The Next Generation.”

“Yes, it’s the Star Trek universe, and that has certain immutable laws and there’s a base kind of tone to it, but within that you can do whatever you want,” he added.

Hutchinson admitted that the Assassin’s Creed series is becoming a little taxing for the core gamer because it asks them to remember a large number of story threads, strung over a seven-year release period.

The developer also evaluated Assassin’s Creed III, telling players that about 90 percent of what they will experience in the game is new, from story to mechanics to setting.

The game moves the action to the American Revolution and introduces a new central character who takes to the woods rather than cities to defeat his enemies.

Assassin’s Creed III will be out on the PC, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 on October 30 in North America and one day later in Europe.
