Super Smash Bros. 2 Has Limits When It Comes to New Characters

When it comes to the new Super Smash Bros. 2 video game for the Nintendo Wii and the 3DS, fans should not expect to see the development team including a number of new characters, because the series is already stressing the limits when it comes to playable heroes.

Masashiro Sakurai, the man behind Super Smash Bros., told Nintendo Power that, “It isn’t a matter of ‘if the next game has 50 characters, that’ll be enough.’”

“There is a certain charm to games that have huge casts of playable characters, but they tend to have issues with game balance and it becomes very difficult to fine-tune each character and have them all feel distinctive,” he continued.

He added, “In terms of quantity, we’ve probably already reached the limit of what’s feasible.”

The statement will be a blow to those fans who have started numerous petitions and initiatives designed to get Nintendo to include a certain obscure character or boost the powers of one that’s already included in the game.

Sakurai has also reiterated the company line that then-new Super Smash Bros. will change the nature of the franchise in significant ways, although he declined to explain exactly how it would do so.

Nintendo is collaborating with Namco Bandai on the new game and the two companies have said that the connection between the 3DS handheld and the Wii U home console will change the way the fighting game is played.

Sakurai has previously hinted that he will mine Nintendo’s past in order to find a number of interesting characters to include.

The developer also says that more effort will go into balancing, with the entire team ready to make sure that no character is overrated on launch.

Neither Nintendo nor Namco Bandai has offered a potential launch window for Super Smash Bros. 2.
