Social Gaming Is Better Suited to Game of Thrones than RPG or Strategy

The upcoming Game of Thrones Ascent from Disruptor Beam will use social game mechanics in order to deliver the best gaming representation of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series from R.R. Martin.

Jon Radoff, who is the chief executive officer working at Disruptor Beam, stated, “I don’t think it’s a good environment about classic single player gamers. I have nothing to say about any games that might be set in the same universe. Traditionally, most RPGs are about beating up monsters and getting loot; that doesn’t work well in Westeros, but it’s a good universe for a strategic gameplay.”

The executive believes that the social nature of his own project is a very good fit to the number of factions involved in the fight for the Seven Kingdoms and to the way they tend to interact.

Radoff added, “A lot of typical fantasy worlds like Lord of the Rings have clear cut good and evil where good guys form a band to fight evil and that’s not very dynamic for social games. In Game of Thrones Ascent, you can evoke all the feelings of the series.”

The development team will try to create a game world that should allow each player to live the same kind of political intrigue, with betrayal and brittle alliances, that dominate the books.

The most recent Game of Thrones based release was an action role-playing game from developer Cyanide, which focused on two characters, Alester and Mors, and created a story that ran before the start of the first book.

The same developer also delivered a strategy experience based on the universe.

Another MMO based on A Song of Ice and Fire is being developed by Bigpoint under the Seven Kingdoms name.

Game of Thrones Ascent currently lacks a launch date, but it will be initially launched exclusively on Facebook.
