Seas Might Rise by 18-to-29 Feet in the Future

Most scientists agree that the following years will bring us an increase in global sea levels. However, some argue that, because of global warming, seas might rise sooner and higher than originally estimated.

Thus, while some speak in favor of a 13-to-20 feet (approximately 4-to-6 meters) rise, others argue that our seas and oceans will go up by as much as 18-to-29 feet (about 5,5-to-9 meters).

Climate Central informs us that just this past Thursday, a research published in the journal Science brought forth the idea that future sea levels rise might indeed be considerably higher than we originally estimated, primarily because the ice caps in Greenland and Antarctica are beginning to melt.

The study is based on an analysis of how planetary oceans changed throughout time on account of fluctuating weather patterns.

More precisely: this isn't the first time in our planet's history when ice caps melt, and by looking into how this impacted on our natural world in the past, we can make more accurate predictions about the future.

Apparently, this phenomena is already an on-going one: since around the year 1880, the melting of this ancient ice has led to nearly 8 inches (roughly 0,2 meters) being added to former sea levels.

As the same source explains, an increase of 29 feet in sea levels will have devastating effects on coastlines around the world.

However, Andrea Dutton from the University of Florida explains that human society still has time to find valid solutions for this problem prior to its emerging, mainly because, as she puts it, the melting of century-old ice caps “isn't going to happen over night.”

For the time being, it seems that all that is left for us to do – other than continue to speculate about just how high our global waters will eventually get – is to get involved and help delay the unavoidable by diminishing our ecological footprint to some extent, in the hope that this might buy us some time to come up with a definitive solution.
