Arkane Studios Needed Two Years to Create Distinctive Dishonored Look

The development team at Arkane Studios has revealed that it has spent two years during the pre-production stage of Dishonored just looking for the stylized art that makes the world of the game distinct from that of other action role-playing experiences.

Sebastien Mitton, who is the art director working on the game, has told the audience at the Develop event that, “Pre-production was the crucial element. It’s why the game is here today.”

Viktor Antonov, who is the visual designer director working at ZeniMax Media, said that the team went to both London and Edinburgh in order to look at a huge number of images and real-world buildings and see what made them interesting and distinctive.

At the same time, Mitton added, “We were trying to design the game from a rat’s viewpoint. If we have a small city, from a constrained viewpoint, what are all the different angles that we can explore?”

The architecture, the themes of the various areas of the game and the lightning are all used in order to add different moods to the game and influence the way the player approaches his missions and uses his abilities.

Since Dishonored was initially announced the city of Dunwall was one of the stars of the promotional campaign, mixing steampunk and Victoria elements with some mystical influences.

In the game, players will play the role of Corvo, a former bodyguard to the Empress who is falsely accused of her death.

He needs to use a range of supernatural powers and weapons in order to clear his name and deal with powerful political forces within the city.

Dishonored is at the moment set to be launched on October 9 in North America and three days later in Europe, on the PlayStation 3 from Sony, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PC.
