Lenovo Windows 8 ThinkPad Tablet Debuts

Lenovo has used the “ThinkPad” brand for its Android tablets for quite a while now, but the name has now been applied to slates of other types.

The company hasn't officially titled the tablet revealed at Computex 2012 and examined by Engadget. It's just convenient for us and them to use that name (and it was even etched on the bezel).

Likewise, Lenovo didn't reveal the core specifications, beyond the OS and hints regarding the likely CPU.

That said, Windows 8 will be loaded onto the device, which means that sales won't begin until fall. Microsoft won't have the OS out before then after all.

Also, the CPU will be part of the Intel Clover Trail series. That's right, this isn't an ARM-based device, unlike what the looks (and the name itself) would suggest.

Going by the photos of the product, the non-Android ThinkPad looks exactly like Lenovo's Android ThinkPad, down to the 10.1-inch LCD.

Speaking of which, the liquid crystal display has a native resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels.

Moving on, Lenovo tossed in a micro-HDMI output and two cameras: an 8-megapixel camera at the back and a 2-megapixel webcam on the front, right above the screen.

If we were to guess, we would say that the Intel CPU inside the new mobile consumer electronic would be backed by 2 GB of DDR3 RAM (random access memory).

Storage options shouldn't differ from the standard ones either (16 GB / 32 GB NAND Flash), but it isn't impossible for a thin HDD to be available as an option.

We are certain that more information on the tablet will emerge over the coming months, maybe sooner if someone gets to handle it personally during the ongoing Computex 2012 show.

In the meantime, the IdeaPad S2109 should be a convenient alternative. It will start shipping this month, if it hasn't already, for $349 / 291 Euro.
