The Last of Us Combines Good Story with Gameplay, Naughty Dog Says

Naughty Dog is trying to combine a lot of things for its upcoming The Last of Us survival game, chief among which being the story and gameplay, which will blend together in order to immerse players in the action and make them care about the protagonists, Joel and Ellie, at least according to Game Director Bruce Straley.

The Last of Us is one of the few all-new intellectual properties that is set to appear in 2013, with Sony and Naughty Dog trying to deliver a bold new experience that emphasizes not just action but actual survival, as the player guides Joel and Ellie through a post-apocalyptic world.

We already admired quite a few impressive videos in recent months and now The Last of Us director Bruce Straley has talked with Gamesindustry about the developer’s desire to combine storytelling and gameplay into a polished package.

“Part of making a video game is telling a story, so for us it's interesting to find out how to best marry good storytelling with good gameplay," he said.

If this goal is achieved, then players will care not just about the protagonists but also about what happens to them throughout the story

"It's just consciousness of how to marry gameplay with the motivations of these characters. If we're doing our job right, you as the player feel aligned with the motivations of these characters. The feeling that you get when you're playing through these environments is the same feelings that these characters are feeling. That takes a lot of consciousness and a lot of effort to try to figure out how to use the interactive medium and the storytelling and weave them together," he added.

The Last of Us is set to appear sometime in 2013, exclusively for the PlayStation 3, so expect to hear much more about the game until then.
