The Elder Scrolls Online Might Appear on Consoles or Have Tablet Support

The Elder Scrolls Online is currently in development at Zenimax Online Studios and the boss of the company, Matt Firor, has revealed that he isn’t ruling out the possibility of bringing the MMO to other platforms besides the PC or Mac, or implementing support for mobile devices like smartphones or tablets.

The Elder Scrolls Online is set to appear in 2013, the same year when some industry pundits are expecting the release or at least the announcement of next-generation consoles.

As such, some people are wondering if the long-awaited MMO will appear on other platforms besides the PC and Mac, which have already been announced.

Zenimax Online Studios isn’t thinking of this right now, according to Matt Firor, who believes in keeping the doors open to all possibilities, but only after the game is ready for release.

“We haven't thought about it heavily right now,” he told Gamesindustry. “The worst thing you can do is worry about new platforms while in development. We want to do what we're doing right now and then look around for further opportunities. Certainly, we're open to new opportunities, and we're going to be looking into new territories beyond North America and Europe.”

As of right now, however, the PC and Mac platforms are still better for an MMO like TES Online, as they allow for an open experience.

“It mostly comes down to PCs being wide open. Online game development is all about doing whatever you want, pushing limitations, and it's just easier to do on an open platform. Someday, it may all change.”

One area that might see some interesting innovation is mobile support, as Firor believes that an online experience should be available both on the actual platforms, PC and Mac, but also on mobile ones, like smartphones or tablets.

“Things are changing pretty quickly. I think probably, and I'm not giving any insight into what we're doing, but I think eventually you will be able to connect to the same world with many different devices; I think that's where it will all go,” he said.

“So you can connect via iPad and have a game experience, and then go home to your PC or Mac and have a different experience and be able to type, but all tied to the same world. The Xbox SmartGlass is exactly that, and I thought that when I first saw it.”

As of right now, Zenimax Online Studios is hard at work on The Elder Scrolls Online, ahead of its release in 2013.
