Rebooting Tomb Raider Similar to Recreating Batman or James Bond

The man leading the effort to create the rebooted Tomb Raider has compared the effort to that others have put in when recreating intellectual properties like Batman or James Bond.

Karl Stewart, the global brand director at Crystal Dynamics, tells Games Industry that, “It is definitely one of the most important and also one of the most challenging projects we’ve ever taken on.”

“To take a franchise that has been around so long, that has such a big following… many gamers today will look back and remember fondly Tomb Raider as being one of the first games they played. The lore that they created, to try and reimagine that is the same as having to redo a James Bond or a Batman,” he then reports.

The Crystal Dynamics team needed to initially do a lot of research in order to understand the essence of the franchise before starting work on the rebooted Tomb Raider.

Stewart further adds, ”It was a big challenge obviously as the franchise has been around for a long time; it had been very successful and sometimes you don’t want to rock the boat. I think we realized that it was a great challenge and there was a big reward at the end of it if we could make it right.”

The executive says that even creating an entirely new intellectual property would be less stressful than rebooting such a well-known series.

The new game will star Lara Croft as a youngster getting her first taste of violence as she is stranded on an island and is forced to find the inner resources to explore a hostile world while developing her survival and battle skills.

The rebooted Tomb Raider is set to launch on the PlayStation 3 from Sony, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PC on March 5 of 2013.
