Read Chris Nolans Farewell Letter to Batman Here

Chris Nolan's name has been tied to the Batman franchise for years, but 2012 marks the moment he lets it go, with “The Dark Knight Rises,” the final installment, now out in theaters. It's hard saying goodbye to such a character, Nolan writes.

SuperheroHype got their hands on the farewell letter Nolan wrote to Batman in a foreword to the tie-in book “The Art and Making of The Dark Knight Trilogy.”

It's a lengthy, beautifully worded piece that explains how Nolan never set out to make a trilogy because he was too afraid to think so far ahead into the future, but did it nonetheless because it felt right.

He recalls the risks he took with every new installment, as well as those he was too coward to take, and cherishes the moments he had next to an incredible cast, an incredible staff and an incredible world populated by characters he helped bring to life.

“Michael, Morgan, Gary, Cillian, Liam, Heath, Christian ... Bale. Names that have come to mean so much to me. My time in Gotham, looking after one of the greatest and most enduring figures in pop culture, has been the most challenging and rewarding experience a filmmaker could hope for,” Nolan concludes by saying.

“I will miss the Batman. I like to think that he’ll miss me, but he’s never been particularly sentimental,” adds the famous director.

If you're a fan of Nolan's work and of Batman in particular, this is a must-read, trust us.
