Pro Cycling Manager 2012 Diary: Stage 13 and the Storming of the Bastille

July 14 is the National Day of France, the day when the revolutionary forces have managed to storm the Bastille and when historians generally accept that their fight over the monarchy was won, which means that in Le Tour de France the teams hailing from the Hexagon will try everything to get a win.

The stage seems pretty flat and, at first, it appears to be at the mercy of the sprinting teams and their elaborate trains, but there’s a nasty little surprise towards the end, in the form of the Mont St. Clair, which could allow a puncheur to distance the rest of the bunch and then solo the rest of the 14 km towards victory.

I might have the right guy to try and get away in Tiago Machado, one of the younger riders in my team and a core mountain man, and plan to have him near the front of the race when the Category 3 climb comes around in order to try something spectacular.

My initial plan failed spectacularly, and this was turning into another sprint finish that I would not be able to contest.

With less than 10 km to go, my riders were out of position and I simply did not have the cyclists to create a proper train.

Then I managed to link up Maxime Montfort, who is an all-purpose helper, and Benatti, my main sprinter, and then pushed the pace hard in order to first get through the pack to the front and then perfectly time my sprint.

For a while there, it seemed like Cadel Evans might beat me in the photo finish but I was finally able to snatch the spring win that eluded me so far.

Take a look at how I managed to pull off this win below:
