Petermann Glacier Displaying Significant Ice Loss

Satellite observations conducted recently indicate that the Petermann Glacier, on the northwestern coasts of Greenland, has again lost an important volume of ice, which now constitutes a massive free-floating iceberg, roaming through the North Atlantic Ocean.

This is not the first time that experts noticed this very important glacier as it lost large volumes of ice. Satellites such as the NASA Aqua spacecraft are currently measuring it from above. The new images were collected using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument.

The latest massive iceberg to calve off Petermann Glacier formed in 2010. Now, nearly two years later, another large ice island is moving downstream from its point of origin. The calving event occurred between July 16 and 17, 2012.

Scientists at NASA say that this event marks a retreat of the famous glacier well beyond historical calving points. This could be an indicator that global warming is putting more pressure on its ices.
