OCZs Next Gen Barefoot 3 Controller Will Likely Change the SSD World

OCZ is one of the leading players in the SSD market and the company is investing heavily in its R & D. In fact, OCZ has been investing all its profits into acquiring new technology, patents and even companies like Indilinx.

In a surprising turn of events, we’ve revealed that OCZ’s Vertex 4 controller is actually a rebranded Marvell chip and the Indilinx team was “only” responsible for the amazing firmware that manifested impressive performance.

We have just found that the first original Indilinx/OCZ designed controller has reportedly taped out at TSMC.

The analysts at Xbitlabs.com have revealed that the new design is manufactured in 65 nm technology and is a 32-bit RISC architecture working at 400 MHz.

"We have recently gave out our next generation Indilinx Barefoot 3 controller and expect to receive sample silicon back from our foundry partner TSMC in coming weeks. We expect to begin sampling SSDs on this controller in the August to September timeframe. We expect to have SSD sales related to Barefoot 3 in the third fiscal quarter," said Ryan Petersen, OCZ’s CEO at the company’s conference call.

The company expects much higher performance from their new controlled design and they believe that its will actually change the SSD world.

The new controller is based on the Aragon RISC core that works in 32-bit.
