Keep Thin by Cutting Your Food into Small Pieces

According to investigators at the Arizona State University (ASU), in Tempe, it would appear that cutting your food into small pieces makes it more enjoyable, as well as more likely to curb hunger.

Researchers say that eating small pieces instead of a large, uncut portion produced a higher degree of satiation within a test group. The correlation was valid even when the test food was a bagel. ASU researchers gave students a bagel either as a single portion, or cut into quarters.

The test participants were then offered a complimentary lunch, about 20 minutes after the bagel. After they finished eating, researchers investigated leftovers from both the lunch and the bagel. The team found that those who ate the bagel as a single portion ate more calories during their meal.

“Cutting up energy-dense meal foods into smaller pieces may be beneficial to dieters who wish to make their meal more satiating while also maintaining portion control,” ASU investigator and lead study author, Devina Wadhera, explains. The work, she adds, was carried out on 301 students.
