HP Puts ARM Second Once Again

We were quite surprised to see HP launch Intel Atom-based high-density servers in their Gemini server line that was originally thought to be launching with Calxeda technology. Now, HP is again putting ARM in second place as it is launching x86 Atom-based tablets and postponing ARM Windows RT tablet products.

HP already contacted us and explained that Calxeda-based products are not “dropped,” but will be released later.

Intel was able to quickly offer 64-bit and ECC support for its lower-performing Atom processors, so HP went ahead with Intel-based products.

HP is now reportedly delaying its ARM-based business-oriented tablet using Microsoft’s Windows RT operating system in favor of launching Intel Atom-based tablets using the popular x86 Windows 8 operating system.

Therefore, we can’t help but notice that this is the second time ARM technology is put second by HP, compared with Intel’s x86.

It is true HP has not taken this decision based on the hardware performance, but rather on the fact that by using Atom and x86 Windows 8, it will be able to offer the wide software variety available for the Microsoft operating system.

Although this is not saying that ARM is in any way inferior to Intel’s x86-based processor, it appears that HP doesn’t seem to be willing to put ARM first and give it a fair chance against x86.

We’re not saying that HP is not a fair company, as it is currently the best example of fairness by launching AMD SleekBooks and Intel UltraBooks using mainly the same specifications and letting users choose the best product.

On the other hand, we’re somewhat disappointed that the company won’t concurrently launch ARM and x86 Windows 8/RT tablets.

Moreover, showing too much support for competing technologies such as ARM or AMD might upset Intel, and that’s not desirable for the world’s biggest personal computer maker.
