Google Wants to Fight Drugs, Human Trafficking and Other Illicit Networks

Google is doing a lot of things, among them being Google Ideas, a think tank designed to tackle the world's biggest problems by throwing technology at them. Its latest undertaking is stopping violent illicit networks, i.e. any type of illegal trafficking, drugs, organs, people and so on.

At least, Google doesn't set its sights low. It's been working for the past few months with people and organizations involved in the fight against trafficking to see what can be done.

"We believe that technology has the power to expose and dismantle global criminal networks, which depend on secrecy and discretion in order to function. And for the past few months, we’ve been working with people fighting on the front line to gain a better understanding of what drives these networks and how they function," Jared Cohen, director of Google Ideas, said.

One thing that Google thinks should be done is getting experts in these fields as well as people affected by these problems together.

Even though the issues these people deal with are different, they share the same common characteristics and getting everyone to share their ideas and findings could lead to solutions that may not have come up otherwise.

To do this, it's organizing the Illicit Networks: Forces in Opposition (INFO) summit where a diverse crowd will convene to tackle the issues. The summit is taking place this week and Google will be making available some videos from it online on YouTube.

"Too often illicit networks are seen only in the silos of those who study them. This summit aims to break down those silos by bringing together a full-range of stakeholders, from survivors of organ trafficking, sex trafficking and forced labor to government officials, dozens of engineers, tech leaders and product managers from Google and beyond," Cohen explained.
