Galaxy S IIIs Screen Dimmer than Other Models

Samsung promised increased battery usage for its Galaxy S III smartphone, despite the inclusion of a larger screen and a more powerful processor inside it when compared to other models.

Apparently, the company also performed a series of small tricks to ensure that the phone needs less battery juice to operate, some of which affect the screen’s brightness.

To be more precise, Dr. Ramond Soneira of DisplayMate Technologies published a report on Galaxy S III’s display, saying that it offers lower brightness when compared to older generation Galaxy S devices.

According to the report, Samsung cut the power for the screen from 2.1 watts to only 1.3 watts, which significantly reduces the battery use.

However, the immediate effect was a diminished brightness, down to only 224 candelas per square meter from the 289 candelas per square meter on Galaxy S II.

To make sure that the smartphone could still have its display rated as being “very good,” Samsung designed it as non-reflective, which compensates for the lower brightness levels.

“The Maximum and Peak Brightness for the Galaxy S III are significantly lower than the S II and S I, and they are in turn lower than most LCDs. Fortunately, the Screen Reflectance of the Galaxy S series is among the lowest we have ever measured and that helps overcome much of the Brightness shortfall,” said report reads.

The new flagship Android-based smartphone landed on shelves with a 4.8-inch touchscreen display, capable of delivering a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.

Last year’s Galaxy S II was launched with a 4.3-inch display, which could deliver only a 480 x 800 pixels resolution.

The aforementioned report rated both Galaxy S III and Galaxy S II smartphones as B+, while the older Galaxy S handset was rated only B.

“We take display quality very seriously and provide in-depth objective analysis side-by-side comparisons based on detailed laboratory measurements and extensive viewing tests with both test patterns and test images,” the report also states.

Those who would like to learn more info on these tests, as well as on the results they uncovered regarding Samsung’s three generations of Galaxy S smartphones, should head over to this page on DisplayMate.
