Gaikai Leader Wants Sony to Focus on Gaming for Next Console

The Gaikai digital streaming company that David Perry has been leading for the last few years has just been sold to Sony, but the executive says that he wants to push his new bosses to create a home console experience that is more focused on the needs of the core gamer.

David Perry, who has created such video games as Sacrifice, MDK and Earthworm Jim, has told the audience at Develop 2012 that, “I’ve been saying for a long time – and this is not my opinion post-Sony, this is my opinion period – is I don’t think the consoles are going to be called consoles any more.”

He added, “There have been little signs of it coming. You probably saw in the last generation of advertising, Sony’s was, ‘it only does everything,’ they’re turning into media hubs. You can see Microsoft has been doing the same.

“They did a deal with Comcast to put Comcast content and Netflix and everything else, and they’re very proud of the fact. And you saw at E3 their big presentation talked a lot about other stuff.”

Perry believes that the new generation of devices that Sony and Microsoft is preparing needs to be focused on gaming and deliver a great experience before branching out into other media and entertainment experiences.

Neither Sony nor Microsoft has announced exact plans for their next devices, although rumors have suggested everything from better integration of motion tracking to devices that lack any sort of physical drives and focus only on digital distribution.

Sony has not said exactly what it plans to do with the technology that it has acquired from Gaikai.

The company allows publishers to move their games to its own servers with players able to use less powerful machines in order to play modern video games with good graphics quality and limited lag.
