Firefox 14 with Encrypted Google and Click-to-Play Plugins Is Here

Firefox 14 , technically Firefox 14.0.1, has now been officially released. The build has been available for a while now, if you knew where to look, but the main Firefox site has now been updated to serve the latest version. At this point, there's not much new to talk about with Firefox 14; it's spent three months in public development.

SSL Google Search

One big new feature in Firefox 14 is the switch to the SSL version of Google search for all embedded searches.

In practice, this means that searches initiated from the search box, from the AwesomeBar or from the mouse context menu, i.e. the ability to search for words you have selected on a page, will go through the HTTPS version of the search engine.

It's a big privacy boon and an obvious default, privacy should be built in and not opt-in. It took some time for Google to get its SSL search engine and particularly the API capable handling the amount of traffic Firefox sends its way, but once that was sorted, Mozilla wasted no time implementing the feature.

No more confusing favicons next to the AwesomeBar

Another smaller change in Firefox 14 is the removal of favicons from the AwesomeBar. The feature could be exploited by malicious sites which would use favicons in the shape of the padlock Firefox, and other browsers, use to signal that a page is accessed via an encrypted connection, HTTPS.

Click-to-play plugins

Another useful feature, perhaps aimed more at power users, is the ability to have plugins load on-demand, the so-called click-to-play feature. Annoying Flash ads, videos that start playing in background pages and issues with Flash in general should be proof enough of why the feature was needed.

Click-to-play is not enabled by default, it can't even be accessed via the regular preferences dialog, but you can go to about:config . Search for "plugins.click_to_play" or create the option if it's not there (it's a boolean value) and set it to true.
