European Drivers Now Faced with New Carbon Emission Standards

Just yesterday, the European Commission made public news its proposal to cut down car gas emissions on this continent by a third. The time limit for this green-oriented accomplishment is 2020.

Although diminishing CO2 emissions resulting from cars in Europe was something agreed upon quite a while ago, it seems that it is only now that the members of the European Commission are ready to pin-down the exact rules and regulations by which these standards will be met within the established time frame.

As explained on the European Commission's website, several technical and economic analyses conducted during the past few months all lead to the conclusion that it is possible to cut average car emissions by 95 grams per kilometer.

Connie Hedegaard, a member of the European Commission, explains how these new standards will not just help protect the environment against further abuses, but will also aid modern society, since fewer money will be spent on fuels and new job opportunities will emerge.

Her exact words were: “With our proposal we are not only protecting the climate and saving consumers money. We are also boosting innovation and competitiveness in the automotive sector. And we will create substantial numbers of jobs as a result. This is a clear win-win situation for everyone.”

In order for this proposal to be implemented, both the European states and the members of the European Parliament must vote on it.

However, set-backs might arise as some car manufacturers are not likely to be fully at ease with the fact that they must make significant investments in diminishing the ecological footprint of the vehicles they manufacture.

Connie Hedegaard also told the press that she and other people involved in greening-up our lifestyle are presently working towards figuring out what can be done in terms of further cutting down on gas emissions once the 2020-target is successfully met.
