Epic Games Has No Plans for Wii U Unreal Engine 4

Developer Epic Games does not have plans to create Unreal Engine 4 powered games for the Nintendo Wii U home console, but the company believes that the platform will be able to run titles that other companies create using the new graphics engine.

Mark Rein, a vice president at Epic Games, tells Videogamer that, “We have Unreal Engine 3 running on Wii U. You saw games at the Nintendo press conference again this year – a fantastic demo by our friends at Warner Bros. showing Arkham City running on Wii U. And Aliens: Colonial Marines is coming on Wii U, that’s also Unreal. There’s, I’m sure, several others.”

He adds, “I’ll state that I don’t think it’s our intention to bring Unreal Engine 4 to Wii U, but Unreal Engine 4 is going to be supremely scalable. We’ll run on mobile phones and on a wide variety of things, so if a customer decides they want to port an Unreal Engine 4 game to Wii U, they could. But Unreal Engine 3 is a really good fit for that platform.”

Epic Games has announced that Unreal Engine 4 is at the moment only designed to support the PC.

The first title to use the new technology will be called Fortnite and will be centered around cooperation and survival, with the player asked to scavenge for resources during the day and then battle enemies in nighttime.

Fortnite will be launched during 2013 and Epic Games says that it might also port it to other platforms later.

Neither Sony nor Microsoft has announced exact plans for their next-generation devices but analysts believe that Epic Games has worked with both companies in order to make sure that the devices will be able to run Unreal Engine 4 powered video games.

The Wii U lacks a launch date or a price.
