EA Wants Battlefield and Medal of Honor to Be Different

Publisher Electronic Arts is keen on making sure that there’s a clear separation between its two first-person shooter franchises, the DICE-made Battlefield and the Danger Close-created Medal of Honor.

Frank Gibeau, the leader of the EA Games label at the company, has told Game Informer that, “We are very careful that Battlefield and Medal of Honor stay differentiated. With Medal of Honor we tried to embrace that the game is real. The multiplayer is different than Battlefield.”

He added, “There is an inefficiency to having two different brands coming out alternating like that, there is some upside. You don’t have the annualized, sequel fatigue. We’re trying to use a sequencing strategy to keep it as fresh and different as possible. The trick is figuring out how to grow both of them together.”

It’s clear that Gibeau was trying to compare the Electronic Arts approach, with the clear separation between Medal of Honor and Battlefield, with that taken by rival Activision, which brands each yearly release with the Call of Duty name.

Recently a listing for Medal of Honor: Warfighter pre-orders on Origin pointed to the existence of Battlefield 4, indicating that buyers would get a key to enter into the beta phase of the game.

Medal of Honor: Warfighter is the major first-person shooter release for the fall from EA and it is coming to the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 and the PC on October 23 in North America.

The game will focus on a new terrorist threat and will place more of an emphasis on the characters driving the story.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II will be released on November 13 all over the world.

Electronic Arts has not officially announced that Battlefield 4 was in development, but the company acknowledged that developer DICE was working on a new project.
