Castlevania: Lords of Shadow DLC Was a Rushed Mistake

The downloadable content packs launched for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, titled Reverie and Resurrection, have disappointed gamers and one of the Konami executives who has worked on them admitted that they were both rushed and underdeveloped.

Dave Cox, who is the head of product planning at Konami and the producer of Lords of Shadow, has told Gameranx that, “We never planned to do DLC, so we ended up doing DLC after the fact and in hindsight that was a mistake. It was rushed. We had to rush it to market.”

“When you have success there’s pressure on you to bring something else to market very quickly, and I think it was wrong of us to do that,” he admits.

Despite the problems linked to Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, the company still has plans to incorporate DLC into its upcoming projects, although it plans to use another approach in order to ensure better quality.

Cox also believes “I think we enriched the story that we wanted to tell, but I think if we were going to do DLC again it would have to be planned right from the get go.

“And it wouldn’t be something that would try to build upon an ending—it would be something that’s perhaps a side story that enriches the original story. If we were going to do DLC again it would be something much more carefully considered,” he further reports.

The core idea would be to create content that should expand the universe and the way players perceive characters rather than simply take a section away during the development process and then add it back in at a later date.

Konami is now working on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, which will be a direct sequel with Mirror of Fate setting up the story of the new game when it arrives on the Nintendo 3DS.
