Research In Motion (RIM) launched the BlackBerry Screen Reader application several months ago, but the software supported only a limited number of devices.
In fact, only three smartphones were supported until recently: Blackberry Curve 9350, Curve 9360 and Curve 9370. However, starting today, RIM added two more devices to the list of supported smartphones, the Curve 9320 and Curve 9220.
Aside from supporting two new smartphones, the latest version of BlackBerry Screen Reader comes with loads of new features and improvements.
BlackBerry Screen Reader now comes with basic browser support, so the application is able to have a loaded webpage read to users.
A Help Menu is available in the Settings menu, so users can access an English help menu to provide them with additional assistance.
Other new features available in the latest version of BlackBerry Screen Reader include the following:
- Additional Shortcut Features - Previously, the application shortcut (Right Convenience Key + Send) only supported email messaging. The updated shortcut is now designed to allow you to re-read a loaded webpage without refreshing your browser; it also allows you to easily read SMS and BBM messages, from the most recent to least recent message.
- Additional Caller ID Screen Support - The first version of the BlackBerry Screen Reader would only read the number that was calling. The functionality has now been extended to the caller ID screen to also identify the contact’s name (if available).
Blackberry Screen Reader is now available as a free download here. Keep in mind the web page users ActiveX control that work only in Microsoft Internet Explorer, so don’t try to use other Internet browsers.
