Battlefield Premium-like Bundles Could Appear for Other EA Games

Electronic Arts has talked about the success of its Battlefield Premium bundle for Battlefield 3, stating that it's much better than Activision's Call of Duty Elite service and confirming that the strategy might be applied for other games.

Activision revealed the Call of Duty Elite service for Modern Warfare 3 last year and allowed fans to pay a subscription and receive all sorts of in-game goodies, as well as new content for the game ahead of everyone else.

EA expressed its interest in the service and revealed its own Battlefield Premium bundle earlier this month, offering Battlefield 3 players all sorts of goodies and early access to the game's upcoming expansion.

Now, after we have heard that over 800,000 Battlefield Premium bundles have been sold, EA's Frank Gibeau has confirmed that the company didn't want just to copy Call of Duty Elite.

"We've launched subscription businesses in our other categories. We had EA Sports subscription before Elite came out, so adding that component to the design is not a reaction. It's something we'd always been considering and we had been looking at," he told GamesIndustry.

"Having said that," he went on, "they [Activision] did something really innovative and if your competitor does something innovative and you think it applies to what you can do, then there's no harm in doing that."

Gibeau also hints that other games might also receive the Premium treatment in the future.

"We actually think our Premium service exceeds what Elite does - from a value standpoint, from a content standpoint, and longer term we think that we can bring more properties into that offering and that'll be great for the business," he added.

Battlefield Premium is a success, so it's going to be interesting to see how EA will adapt the strategy to other titles.
