Sony and Microsoft to Blame for Lack of Console Free-to-Play, Says Crytek

Free-to-play titles are a big hit on the PC, but they never made the transition to consoles because Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft are unwilling to take a chance on a new business model, according to the leader of the developer behind the Crysis franchise.

Cevat Yerli, who is the chief executive officer at Crytek, has told CVG during an interview that, “Why are free-to-play online games not widespread on consoles? You should ask Microsoft and Sony this question.

รข€œWe see the future of consoles as free-to-play – ideally focussed on free-to-play. That’s what I want to see in the future. But unfortunately not everybody shares this vision due to many other reasons.”

The executive says that he talked to Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo every six months for the last two years in order to convince them to allow a free-to-play implementation of Warface to arrive on their home consoles but had little success.

The pressure of retail partner is one of the core reasons that the hardware developers are reluctant to innovate when it comes to the business model they allow on their consoles.

Yerli added, “So really the number one issue that needs to be resolved is how companies like Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo become independent from retail so that they can go fully digital.”

Warface is the first free-to-play title from Crytek and the company has plans to make all its core games use the same model after the launch of Crysis 3.

The new game in the series will arrive in February 2013 and the development team says that it is a return to the more open structure of the first title in the series.

The single-player story will see Prophet return to New York City, which is now encased in a massive dome, and use his Nanosuit abilities and his new bow in order to find out what’s happening inside the city.
