Sid Meier Says Mobile and Social Is the Future for Civilization and Strategy

The Civilization series of turn-based strategy games have a long history of appealing to the core of the gaming crowd, but it seems that in the future even they will try and make a move to the mobile and social space.

Sid Meier, the current leader of Firaxis, has told Games Industry that, “Mobile is probably a technology we haven’t gotten the most out of. Mobile games now are five minute quick gaming fixes.

รข€œWhen you look at all the technology in a smartphone, the connectivity, the GPS, the camera, there are all sorts of things that could be integrated into a gaming experience that we haven’t thought of yet.”

He added, “I have a feeling that we will start to explore more of what’s possible in the whole space. Who knows what the technology will be. The iPad is a beautiful piece of hardware that does really cool stuff. We’re still trying to catch up in terms of game design and how to take advantage of it.”

As far as Sid Meier is concerned, the technology behind social gaming will soon become as ubiquitous in the gaming world as the CD ROM once was, a conduit to deliver experiences that has the added advantage of making it easy for developers and gamers to interact.

Developer Firaxis has already delivered one Facebook-based experience, Civ World, which offered a stripped-down take on the core concepts of the series, like city buildings, technology research and turn-based battles.

I played the game for a while, but the experience failed to deliver the depth that characterized the core Civilization series.

Firaxis is currently putting the finishing touches on the Gods & Kings expansion for Civilization V, which will be delivered during July.

Later during the year, the company will also launch XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a reimagining of the classic turn-based experience.
