Online Intervention Effective Against Social Anxiety Disorder

University of Central Florida (UCF) investigators say that treating social anxiety disorder is a very complex procedure that involves allowing patients to make progress at their own pace. When it comes to working with children, this is easier said than done.

In a new study, the team highlights a new approach to working with kids. They say that the little ones' own homes offer the ideal setting for an intervention, and say that conducting therapies online, rather than face to face, is proving to be an effective means of addressing this condition.

In collaboration with Atlanta-based company Virtually Better, the research team created a one-of-a-kind computer simulation program that enables kids to interact with a series of avatars of their classmates, teachers, and even their school principal, PsychCentral reports.

Experts say that interacting with these individuals in this manner prepares the child for real-life meetings better than individual therapies can. The entire program, they add, lasts for 12 weeks.
