Mobile Gaming Can Kill Console Gaming, According to Ben Cousins

Hardware developer Microsoft and Sony might be delaying the announcement of their next home consoles, but one veteran of the gaming industry believes that, in as little as 5 years, the entire business might be killed by mobile and social gaming.

Ben Cousins, now the general manager at Ngmoco and former executive of DICE, Sony and Lionhead, told GDC Taipei that, “When I'm talking about mobile, I'm talking about the operating system, not the device,” he clarifies.

“I believe these operating systems will start to appear in other classes of devices, other than just mobile phones and tablets. In the future I think mobile gaming maybe won't be so mobile, and we may need a new definition for them.”

He added, “There's a potential for mobile gaming to kill console gaming," he began. "I'm talking about a significant reduction of market share with no chance of return.”

Cousins says that the move might happen either because players will move to other devices, including mobiles and tablets, or because an entire new market, like that for social games, becomes so much bigger than that for home consoles.

The executive also believes that Facebook, despite its current popularity, is starting to lose its place as gaming platform to mobile device, a trend that will accentuate in the coming years.

Freemium games, which already dominated Japan and parts of Asia, will become even more important and it will be easier for their developers to deliver complex 3D graphics by using a number of middleware tools, from Unreal Engine to Unity.

The first next-generation device to launch will be the Wii U home console, which currently lacks a price or a clear date but is expected to be available before the important Christmas shopping season.

Analysts are expecting to see the new Xbox and PlayStation revealed before 2013.
