E3 2012 Hands On: Battlefield 3 Premium

Battlefield Premium is not actually a game but the reply that developer DICE and publisher Electronic Arts have created after Activision introduced the Elite service for Call of Duty.

Some might say that Premium is too little too late, but the two companies seem to have big plans for it and there are 4 downloadable content packs currently linked to it: Close Quarters, Armored Kill, Aftermath and Endgame.

Close Quarters is set to arrive during June and will introduce a focus on battles in smaller areas, which will force players to change their tactics in order to adapt to the new environments.

Armored Kill is expected towards the end of September 2012 and is designed with fans of vehicle-based warfare in mind, while the last two pieces of DLC are currently kept under wraps by Electronic Arts and DICE, with their launch dates linked to late 2012 and early during 2013.

The developer promises that via the new packs gamers will get access to 20 new maps and weapons, four extra game modes, more customization options and more accessories for their weapons and equipment.

At the moment Premium only offers gamers access to the Close Quarters DLC for Battlefield 3, but early access will be set at 2 weeks for all future content.

The fact that the title of the article says “Hands On” means that I have actually played Battlefield 3 with the new Close Quarters DLC included and the experience is an improvement over what the game had to offer last time I previewed it, during E3 2011.

Teamwork is more important when playing in closed spaces and there’s a new way of looking at weapons when using scopes is no longer something required in order to succeed.

Battlefield Premium might not yet be as popular as Elite for Call of Duty but it has the time and the content that it needs to grow.
