E3 2012 Hands-Off XCOM: Enemy Unknown

It’s pretty hard to offer a decent demo within the time and space constraints of an event like E3 for a big, sprawling complex strategy game like XCOM: Enemy Unknown, but the development team at Firaxis has managed to be very effective with their late game-focused presentation.

Information about the XCOM re-imagining has been mostly about the start of the game, when humanity is outgunned and terrorized by the attacking aliens, and Firaxis wanted to show gamers that the endgame would see the fortunes of the two sides reversed in spectacular manner.

The star of the XCOM demo was indisputably Sid Meier, who was remade in the game as a powerful human psychic, and delivered the first blow to the alien force by forcing one alien to fall on his own grenade.

Chrysalids, one of the most feared units from the original XCOM, were no match for a human sniper that was able to use his armor power to hover over the battlefield and then use a special ability to take two shots during his turn with a powerful plasma rifle.

Even the mind-control-capable alien commander was unable to tackle the elite human squad as he was quickly taken out by a cloaked scout who was able to extend her movement range and scale walls in order to attack before being seen.

Firaxis is keen to point out that the challenge of XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a game that scales the difficulty level to the abilities of the player and underlines the point by showing that even the elite human squad will have a lot of trouble dealing with the Sectopod.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is an ambitious project, mainly because it will bring strategy to the console space, but Firaxis has a strong track record when it comes to the genre.

Launch will take place during the fall season.
