Dishonored was one of the stars of the recent E3 2012 for me, mainly because of the freedom it offers, and the team working on the game at Arkane Studios says that it is happy to see the players take charge of the game mechanics and then break the experience in interesting ways.
âThe first time we saw someone jump off of a huge building and possess someone right before they hit the ground, we were like ‘that is awesome’. No one had thought of that before.”
The developer added, “Or the first time someone used double jump and the blink ability to totally bypass a security system, we were like ‘there went 30 minutes of gameplay in like 2 minutes’, but the player doing that is gonna feel proud they did it, so we don’t wanna shut that exploit down.
âWe want the players to be able to express themselves through the gameplay.”
I got a chance to play Dishonored during E3 2012 and I was impressed by the number of gadgets and powers that the game offers.
All of them can be combined in various ways and open up new ways of interacting with the game world and tackling the challenges that a player encounters.
The initial problem is that the range of choice feels overwhelming and some players might feel unable to create a clear plan out of all the powers that Corvus has.
Regardless, blinking and sticking grenades to enemies always seems like a good plan.
Dishonored will be launched on the PlayStation 3, the PC and the Xbox 360 is out on October 9 in the United States and the usual three days later in Europe.
