Apple Prepares OS X 10.7.5 Lion Release

Tipsters speaking to the tech media indicated that Apple is planning to roll out the fifth maintenance update to OS X Lion, the company’s current desktop operating system that originally shipped in July 2011.

A regrettable OS upgrade for many, OS X Lion failed to live up to Apple’s unified vision combining key features from iOS and Mac OS.

And, despite identical attempts with the upcoming OS X Mountain Lion, it appears this time around the company is getting it right.

But not before shipping OS X 10.7.5, an upcoming update to OS X Lion, which should arrive in tandem with Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) next month, or even sooner.

People who are familiar with the software are telling AppleInsider that “a pre-release build of OS X 10.7.5 is set to be released to a limited number of members of Apple's development community in the coming days,” and that “public testing among all members of the Apple Developer Connection will likely begin soon after.”

This will not be the first time Apple issued a final software update to its desktop operating system just as it was being replaced by the next major version.

A good example is when Apple updated Snow Leopard to version 10.6.8, which ironed out any bugs that could prevent users from installing Lion from the Mac App Store.

The same should apply here. Mountain Lion will be a $19.99 / 15 EUR upgrade from the Mac App Store available to both Snow Leopard and Lion customers in July this year.

Mountain Lion introduces more than 200 new features, including Messages, Notification Center, Facebook integration, Dictation, system-wide Sharing, Power Nap, AirPlay Mirroring, Game Center, and Gatekeeper security.

“The pace of innovation on the Mac is amazing, OS X Mountain Lion comes just a year after the incredibly successful launch of Lion,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “With iCloud built right in and the new Notification Center, Messages, Dictation, Facebook integration and more, this is the best OS X yet.”
