12 Million Cleverly Designed Fake Classmates.com Emails Point to Exploit Kit

Not a day goes by without a report in which we mention that the infamous Blackhole exploit kit is used by cybercriminals to spread malware.

Today seems to be no different since experts have found 12 million emails being sent out in an attempt to lure as many users as possible to compromised sites that host the malicious element.

AppRiver provided a fake Classmates.com sample email and we must admit that it’s almost perfect as far as the design goes. Most of the logos and the text are in the right place, thanking users for joining the Classmates community and urging them to click on a link to verify their email addresses.

Those who make the mistake of following the instructions are taken to one of 202 different domains that host a malicious Java exploit.

“Currently we've seen over 12 million pieces of mail related to this campaign coming in at about 98 pieces per minute per domain. When you do the math that's just under 19,000 pieces per minute,” Fred Touchette explained.
