Weekend Reading: Skyrim, Dawnguard, and Putting a Price on Gameplay Hours

Bethesda released, rather surprisingly, the Dawnguard expansion for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on the PC platform, via Steam, earlier this week.

While all of us here at the Softpedia office agree that more Skyrim is always a good thing, its price tag, however, generated quite a debate.

Most of us got Skyrim when it first appeared on the PC for the full price of $49.99/€49.99. Since then, we’ve spent way too many hours in the mythical land of Tamriel, some even reaching the fabled 200-hour mark with Bethesda’s stunning role-playing game.

Now, Dawnguard appeared as a rather lengthy expansion, adding around 15 hours of new content to the game, according to Bethesda, for a price of $19.99/€19.99.

This, as you can imagine, doesn’t really have a good hour/dollar ratio, as opposed to Skyrim, especially for some of my colleagues who got to spend much more time than me with the RPG.

This problem is accentuated by the appearance of complex downloadable experiences like Orcs Must Die 2, which can easily be played for tens of hours but only costs $14.99/€14.99. You can go even further and bring into question mobile games like Dead Trigger, which can easily entertain for quite a few hours and are completely free (on Android) or cost just $0.99/€0.79 (on iOS).

In the end, it’s up to every gamer to set his own gameplay hour/money spent ratio but it’s getting harder and harder to justify spending money on triple-A experiences that cost $50-$60/€50-€60, while impressive downloadable games or mobile titles can offer plenty of entertainment for a fraction of the price.

Sure, there are still some great experiences like Skyrim or Battlefield 3 that keep players hooked on the experience for long periods of time, but many titles, when you look at the broader picture, should have drastically lower price tags.

What do you think? Will you, for example, spend money on Dawnguard or are you waiting for a discount?
