Viral of the Day: Rob Legatos The Art of Creating Awe TED Talk

Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor Rob Legato knows a thing or two about tricking the mind into seeing things that don't exist, but which it expects to be there. His impressive resume of blockbuster films stands as proof of that.

As such, he's the ideal man for a TED talk on “The Art of Creating Awe” in film. Check it out above and, mark our words, you will not be sorry.

Legato's name may not ring a bell with laymen, but suffice it to say that he worked on visual effects on films like “Apollo 13,” “Titanic,” “Cast Away,” “Harry Potter,” “Armageddon,” “Bad Boys 2,” “The Departed,” “The Aviator,” “Avatar” and “Hugo.”

Indeed, he must know a thing or two about making stuff up out of thin air.

Which is precisely what his TED talk is all about. We all know that films are not real but, as it happens, most of the time, we can't even say how much of what we see is real and what is not.

Legato is one of the few who can boast of the ability to use visual effects to create a reality that can sometimes “even trump the real thing.” Watch and see how he does it.
