The Surge in Google Search URL Removals Is Driven by Adult Entertainment Companies

Frighteningly, the number of DMCA takedown requests Google sees has grown five times in three months. Still, if you believe these requests are necessary you'd hope at least that this means illegal copies of music or movies were removed from Google Search (not that anyone uses Google to look for pirated stuff), maybe helping the artists, or the corporations behind them actually, to make more money.

But the single biggest organization that is handing out these takedown requests to Google is Degban which represents, almost exclusively, "adult entertainment" companies. The third biggest is Takedown Piracy, which also deals almost exclusively with this type of companies.

What's even more ironic is that this type of content may not even be copyrightable.

Copyright was created for the 'the progress of science' and the 'useful arts.' Not that anything about the intent of the first copyright laws, which only covered maps, books and charts, is still being respected. Still, you be the judge if these movies qualify as useful arts or maybe even science.
