Team Fortress 2's New MvM Update Adds an RPG Flavor to the Shooter

Valve has continued to release more details about its upcoming Team Fortress 2 Mann versus Machine update and revealed that quite a lot of new mechanics will be included in the new cooperative mode that will soon be available for the multiplayer shooter.

Team Fortress 2 is a relatively simple game, much like many other competitive shooters, but now Valve is taking the experience to new directions, thanks to the upcoming Mann versus Machine cooperative mode, which pits up to six players against hordes of robots.

We already met the evil machines yesterday and now Valve has revealed the special RPG-like mechanics that will be included in the upcoming update.

In between waves of enemies, players will be able to visit Upgrade Stations where they can spend the money that's earned by looting the remains of the robots.

Upgrade Stations
When a robot kills a human, we erupt into a pleading mist of blood, meat particles and tears, which you can't really trade for anything. But when a robot dies, he explodes in a shower of money, which, during between-wave lulls, you can exchange at any Upgrade Station for weapon, item and ability upgrades.

Among the things that can be purchased at these Upgrade Stations are Canteens, which can be equipped and used in various ways. These items can provide things like an Ubercharge, a Critical Hit Boost, an Ammo refill, an upgrade for the Engineers buildings, or a quick Teleport to the respawn room, in case you need to make a last stand.

Canteens
Here at Mann Co., we take care of our mercs. After you’ve completed your first mission, you will get, free of charge, one Mann Co.-brand canteen. It's equippable in your action slot and filled to the damn brim with life-giving air. If air’s not your thing, these canteens can also be filled with a variety of power-ups at an Upgrade Station. All we ask for in return is your bravery, plus some of the money you might have found on the battlefield. Each canteen holds up to three single-use charges of the same type.

Last but not least, players can also buy Tactics at the Upgrade Stations, which offer certain upgrades for a player's weapons, items, or abilities. You can check out a list of such things at this link.

Tactics
Upgrade Stations give you a wide range of tactical options to choose from. Below, we’ve included a by-no-means comprehensive list of just a few of the weapon, item and ability upgrades you’ll need to hold the line against the Metal Menace.

More details will be revealed about the update later today, when the new mode is expected to go live. The Mann versus Machine add-on, as always, will be released as a free update for the game on Valve's Steam service for the PC and Mac platforms.
