Sacred Citadel Is Inspired by God of War, Darksiders and Super Smash Bros

Southend Interactive, the Swedish developer known for first-person shooter XIII and for puzzle ilomilo, has revealed that it is working on a new game called Sacred Citadel, which is defined as a side-scrolling multiplayer title that uses brawler mechanics.

The core inspiration for the game was the classic Golden Age and the team is trying to update its core mechanics for the current generation of gamers.

Fredrik Bronjemark, the producer and the managing director at the studio, told Gamasutra that, “Historically, Southend have hardly done two games in the same genre. It's kind of a part of our company culture, to not want to do the same thing over and over again, but instead always look for new ways to challenge ourselves.”

The executive acknowledges that the move from ilomilo to Sacred Citadel is a big one, but he also revealed that a lot of new talent was brought into the team since the previous project was completed and shows the diversity of their interests.

It’s not clear whether classic elements of the brawler genre, like button mashing and constant repetition, will be interesting to the modern players.

Fredrik Bronjemark added, “One approach could have been to simply add in a silly amount of different combos or skills that would then be unlocked throughout the game. We did however feel that in most cases, players tend to just learn a few combos, and then use them throughout the game. If there's nothing else going on except new unlocks, that doesn’t really solve the problem.”

For Sacred Citadel, the focus will be on speed and skill while also making the game more open for all those who might be interested in trying it out.

The developer revealed that he was mostly inspired by games like God of War, Darksiders and Super Smash Bros.
