David Cage Concerned About Heavy Rain Impact on Beyond: Two Souls

The leading developer at Quantic Dream, the studio now working with Sony on Beyond: Two Souls, has revealed that his biggest challenge is to create an experience that also appeals to those who have not tried to play his previous effort, Heavy Rain.

David Cage, the developer now working on Beyond: Two Souls, has told Gamasutra that, “My biggest concern about Heavy Rain was not so much what people who played it thought, because the feedback has been consistently very positive about the game. It was much more about the people who didn't play Heavy Rain, what they thought of the game. Just the image they had of it.”

He added that the game he created “was not about watching. You were in the shoes of the character. You were making the choices, and you were telling the story through your actions, and not through prompts, or whatever.”

Cage says that a lot of players chose not to even try Heavy Rain because they had an image of the experience that made it to seem unappealing.

For Beyond: Two Souls, the developer is trying to make the entry barrier as low as possible, allowing them to just pick up the game and get a small piece of the experience before being challenged by the different gameplay mechanics.

The Quantic Dream team is trying to make their new project even more familiar with players who are accustomed to more mainstream titles.

Beyond: Two Souls is a game that follows the same character, played by Ellen Page, for a period of 15 years as she tries to find out why she is being constantly accompanied by an entity.

The game will deal with the question of what happens after death.

Beyond: Two Souls will be launched exclusively on the PlayStation 3 from Sony at some point during 2013.
