Quick Look: Hybrid (with Gameplay Video)

Hybrid is the first foray of developer 5th Cell into the gritty shooter genre, offering an experience quite the opposite of previous games like Scribblenauts.

Promising to deliver a futuristic experience with an emphasis on cover, mobility, and the use of drones that help out during actual matches, Hybrid is looking like an interesting take on the third-person shooter genre.

The multiplayer-only title has now been released on the Xbox Live Arcade, as part of the Summer of Arcade promotion, so let’s have a quick look.

Hybrids kicks off with a cinematic showcasing the partial destruction of Earth and quickly tasks you with choosing a side, either the Paladins or the Variants without any details about their actual appearances, abilities, goals, or ideals.

You’re then quickly thrust into a tutorial that highlights the basic mechanics of Hybrid. If you already played a third-person, cover-based shooter, then you’ll feel right at home here. Controls are practically the same but things start getting interesting when you’re tasked with moving around the battlefield. This can be done only by using your trusty jetpack, as you need to highlight bits of cover and then fly to them.

During this movement, you’re quite vulnerable, as your speed isn’t that great, unless you push the dedicated boost button. You do retain control of your aim and you can select other pieces of cover besides your initial destination but the controls should be more precise in order to encourage such acrobatics in the air.

Another one of Hybrid’s claims to fame is the special drone mechanic. This consists of various devices that can be summoned by racking up kill streaks. These include three drones: a helpful one that sits near you, a bigger one that can fly into battle, and a special ninja-like drone shaped as a woman that flies to your target and immediately finishes it off.

These are quite nifty but their utility in actual combat can’t be determined until you actually start playing against real-life humans. Such a thing isn’t possible just yet, as the game has only been released for a few hours.

Still, you can enjoy a video with the tutorial and practice arena from Hybrid above.
