OnLive Criticizes Sony for Gaikai Acquisition

The Sony move to take over Gaikai, the cloud gaming service, is a sign that the Japanese hardware creator and video game publisher does not really understand the technology and its possibilities, according to a representative from a rival service.

Bruce Grove, who is the general manager of OnLive in the United Kingdom, has stated, “It has validated it. It’s good for us, good for the market and it will help drive the idea further. And Sony’s a consumer devices company so for them it’s an opportunity across all of that hardware.”

He added, “I think it kind of defeats the purpose of cloud gaming to limit it to a subset of devices. The whole point of putting anything into the cloud is to make it available on everything. The whole reason I have a Dropbox account is that I want to access my files from any device.”

The executive believes that all cloud technology should be open and available on a number of devices, from mobiles and home consoles to the PC.

Grove was also asked about the rumors that suggested OnLive to be an acquisition target for Microsoft and said that at that point all the information floating around was just speculation.

Sony has purchased Gaikai earlier during the year, but the company has not yet announced exactly what it plans to do with the cloud and streaming technology.

Most industry watchers speculate that Sony will allow players to enjoy more titles without installing them on their devices and that it might introduce streaming as one of the major features of the PlayStation 4 next-generation console.

Neither Sony nor Microsoft has made official announcements about their plans for a new hardware generation, but they might offer information before the end of the year.

At the moment, streaming and cloud gaming solutions have only been implemented on the PC.
