Gamescom 2012 Day Two Roundup: XCOM, Injustice and the Crowd

Gamescom 2012 has been lacking the big announcements that many were expecting to see and most of the publishers who are here are offering much of the same content that was also shown during E3 earlier during the summer.

One big exception consists of NetherRealm, the people behind the Mortal Kombat series, who have allowed the public to get hands-on time with Injustice – Gods Among Us, the new fighting game that uses characters taken from the DC Comics universe, both heroes and villains.

A few rounds is never enough to know how the end product will play, but so far the experience is solid as long as you can disregard the impossibility that Solomon Gundy will ever be beaten by Nighwing.

I also got to spend time with XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the remake from Firaxis, and the short missions that I played, coupled with the time spent using the base interface persuaded me that we might now have a game that actually bring the series into modernity.

The new REDkit set of tools from CD Projekt also holds great promise and the action and role-playing game might get a lot of new content as long as fans are willing to give the editor time to learn and then to create great adventures.

I also got around to writing about A Game of Dwarves, the management simulation from Paradox Interactive that focuses on the underground exploits of the stubby folk and their supposedly lazy prince.

Today is the first day during which Gamescom is also open to the public and that meant facing a great crowd of players eager to see their favorite titles and generally take in the sights and sounds of the event.

It’s hard to get to places while swimming in this sea of gamers, but they have a lot of enthusiasm and you have to respect their love of gaming.
