Gamescom 2012 Day Three Roundup: A Lot of Soul

On my third and final day of Gamescom I saw District 187 from CJ Games Global and I plan on taking a look at some titles from Capcom later during the day, before I board my plane (reports on them will probably arrive next week).

I mentioned during my first roundup that Gamescom 2012 felt more alive than E3 and I think that I can justify that statement even more after another two days spend at the event.

In many ways the announcements here, except maybe for Tearaway from Media Molecule and Sony, were smaller than those made during E3 and there was none of the expected information about next-generation consoles coming from either Microsoft or Sony.

But there’s a lot of joy on the actual show floor, among both those who are regular visitors, standing in line at 10 in the morning to enter, and among the press and other industry representatives who are showing their games.

The crowd at E3 is made up mostly of industry types and the media, which creates an overall atmosphere of jaded interest and almost no matter what developers and publishers do there’s precious little real excitement.

At Gamescom, even seeing a trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops II sends the crowd into rapture, even if it is the third time they have seen it in the last hour while standing in line for their shot at a quick Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm match.

There are more co-players among the visitors and there’s more of a celebration of video games as a hobby, as a way of escaping our immediate surrounding and doing something incredible once in a while.

Gamescom is harder for me as a journalist and the crowds of visitors to play a role in that, but I am more than happy to bump into them once in a while because they remind why I love game s and how I can celebrate them best.
