CandyBar OS X Tweaking Utility Now Free

Panic, a software company that sells some neat apps for OS X and iOS, has decided to hand over the reins of CandyBar to The Iconfactory. They’ve released one final (major) version for everyone, along with a promise to issue minor maintenance updates whenever necessary. The software is now free.

In a recent blog post, Panic reveals that CandyBar has been updated for OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, the latest release of Apple’s desktop operating system.

“You can now customize the 10.8 system icons. Just launch the app and click the big “Update” button to get the latest IconData,” says Cabel, one of the staffers at Panic.

However, “there’s a catch, or two,” according to the company. Since Mountain Lion changes the way the Dock is rendered, CandyBar is no longer able to customize the icons that live in it.

All you can do now is change the indicator lights for running apps. Moreover, because of application signing to keep up with Gatekeeper, software downloaded from the Mac App Store also can’t be customized by CandyBar from a visual standpoint.

However, because of all this, Panic believes it is no longer entitled to charge money for the app.

“CandyBar, although simply changing files on disk, has always fallen into a slightly-uncomfortable-for-us grey area of existence. It seems clear to us that there will undoubtedly come a time (soon?) when CandyBar can no longer customize system icons at all. So, what do we do?” writes Cabel.

“Since we’re unsure about the long-term future of changing system icons, we’re not comfortable charging money for CandyBar, and we’re also not comfortable simply making it disappear, instead we’re going to make the current CandyBar free — but unsupported,” he reveals.

Addressing longtime fans of the system tweaking utility, Panic promises to strive to keep the app up-to-date with minor releases for Mountain Lion users. However, “if something major changes, on the level of the Dock changes in 10.8, we can’t guarantee compatibility,” according to the post.
