B&N Extends Nook Availability to the UK This Fall

E-readers and e-reading software have become quite widespread, but that does not mean there is a great variety of such things, and Barned & Noble wants to do something about it.

Competing with Amazon's Kindle lineup of hardware and software comes with the territory of being a bookstore chain with its own e-book reading gadget.

Unfortunately for B&N, Amazon's products are available in more regions than its Nook. Thus, the store chain decided to pick up the pace and extend its coverage to another area.

The area in question is a group of large and small islands located to the north-west of Europe: The United Kingdom of England and Northern Ireland.

“We are proud to be able to offer our top-rated line of NOOK reading devices and our award-winning digital bookstore to the discerning and highly educated consumers in the UK,” said William J. Lynch, Barnes & Noble CEO.

The Nook Simple Touch and Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight display will start shipping to clients in the region starting in the middle of October.

“We’re confident our award-winning technology, combined with our expansive content – including books, children’s books, magazines, apps, movies and more – will bring UK customers the option they’ve been waiting for.”

Nook Simple Touch is a basic e-reading device that, nonetheless, features a touchscreen, while the Glowlight version boasts a “a patent-pending lighting technology for reading in the dark.”

Once someone owns one, they will be allowed to download and read one or more of the 2.5 million digital titles available, including top-selling books from UK authors. The number will only grow with the passage of time.

With this, B&N can finally say that its expansion from the US to Europe is finally complete, or far enough along to be called a successful endeavor. After three months, it was about time.
